Abalone shells come from many parts of the world including New Zealand where they are known as Paua. Other common names are Ormer, Perlemoen, Venus- ears and Muttonfish. The meat is considered a seafood delicacy and is environmentally farmed. The shells used for jewellery are a by-product of this industry.
