Abalone Shell

Abalone shells are found in many parts of the world.  In New Zealand, they are known as Paua Shell. Ormer, Perlemoen, Venus-ears and Muttonfish, are other common names. The meat is a seafood delicacy and is environmentally farmed. The shells used for jewellery are a by-product of this industry. When carefully cut and polished the beautiful colours and patterns in the shells come into their own. The shells are often dyed in vibrant shades of blue, pink, purple, and green, in addition to their natural blue and green colours.
